Wedge of Warmth
Warm air on Wednesday will flow north across the Plains and Midwest into Canada. By Thursday, a new storm will bring more snow to the high Plains.
April will end with a shot of warmth across the heartland; however, May will arrive with a new storm moving out of the Rockies.
In addition to sparking a mix of severe storms, rain and snow on Thursday and Friday, the storm will usher in another shot of colder air.
The West Regional News story reports the storm today is moving through the Intermountain West. By late Wednesday, the will system will drop out of the Rockies onto the central Plains.
The system on Thursday will redevelop as it taps into the warm air flowing out of the Southwest. Strong storms will erupt through Friday on the southern side of the storm track as it moves across the Plains into the Upper Midwest.
Rain will fall north of the storm track, while cold air will turn the rain to snow on the high Plains. The Black Hills of South Dakota could be hit by more than 18 inches of spring snow, while lesser amounts are forecast across the western Dakotas and the eastern Plains of Montana and Wyoming.
By Friday, the strong storms will shift into the Ohio and Tennessee valleys, while colder air trails the storms across the Plains into the Midwest. The highs on Thursday in the western Dakotas could be as much as 30 degrees colder than the highs on Wednesday.
