Unusual snow coats Athens amid Greece cold snap
The beaches of Athens, Greece were white on January 8th as a rare snowfall brought several inches of snow to the area.
Beaches across portions of Greece appeared white earlier this week, but it wasn’t due to the color of the sand.
A rare snowfall that fell in parts of southwestern Greece and coated the capital of Athens also blanketed the coastline.
According to Reuters, the snow disrupted railway and bus service.
The snowfall occurred while the region was in the midst of a cold spell due to an invasion of Siberian air which reached the Mediterranean Sea.
AccuWeather Meteorologist Eric Leister said the snow was rare both in terms of duration and the amount that fell all the way to the coastline.
The normal high temperature this time of year is 12 degrees Celsius (54 degrees Fahrenheit) in Athens and temperatures Monday afternoon fell to around 3 C (37 F) before falling below freezing Monday night, Leister said.
