Rounds of heavy rain to bring flooding concerns to southern Europe

Heavy rainfall hammered Genoa, Italy, on Nov. 3, causing river levels to overflow. Italian officials answered dozens of calls due to flooding and mudslides.
After a soggy weekend new storm system moving across western Europe is posed to renew the threat for flooding during the coming week.
On Sunday, scattered showers and thunderstorms continued to wet some parts of the Balkans and Italy, though the overall threat for flooding across the region will be lower compared to past days.
A storm will barrel across the Mediterranean this week. The risk of flash flooding and mudslides will again increase starting in Corsica and Sardinia and spreading eastward across Italy and the western Balkans through Wednesday.
The flood threat will be elevated in locations that have seen repeat downpours or prolonged periods of rain during the past week.
While widespread damaging wind gusts are not expected, saturated soil from the prolonged wet weather will make it easier for trees to fall over, which can cause damage, power outages and travel delays.

Locally severe thunderstorms can produce local areas of most concentrated wind damage. Hail and isolated tornadoes are possible as well with the strongest storms.
This system is expected to be a slow-moving storm which can cause rain to linger for a longer period compared to the past few storms.
By the second half of the week, the storm is expected to slowly pull away from the region, though AccuWeather meteorologists are monitoring the potential for another round of rain by late in the week.
