Yellow warnings issued in UK ahead of windstorm that will pummel Isles, France and northern Spain this weekend

Wind ramped up across western Europe on Saturday as Storm Amélie swept across the region as the first-named windstorm of the season.

The UK Met Office issued yellow warnings for wind and rain until Saturday evening for parts of Wales and England. Warnings for rain will last into Sunday across western Scotland.

Wind gusts reached to 65-75 mph (105-120 km/h) across southwestern England on Saturday morning as the worst of Amélie's conditions swept across the region.

The worst of the wind was confined to the southern coast of England. While not quite as intense, strong wind gusts of 50-60 mph (80-95 km/h) swept across the coastline of northern France.

In addition to the wind, heavy rain will continue to fall across northwest Europe.

Widespread rain amounts of 25-75 mm (1-3 inches) are expected through Monday, with an AccuWeather Local StormMax™ï¸ of 125 mm (5 inches).

The heaviest rain is likely to fall across parts of southern Ireland, southern Wales, southwestern England and western France. Affected cities are likely to include Cork, Ireland; Plymouth, England; and Nantes and Bordeaux, France.

Areas hit by repetitive downpours may be susceptible to ponding on the roadways and in other low-lying areas. Wind-driven rain will reduce visibility for those traveling in any downpour. These conditions could create travel disruptions.

Gusty winds are likely to add to those travel disruptions and delays.

The push of the strongest winds will occur through Saturday evening, though a disruptive wind will continue across northwest Europe into Sunday.

The strongest wind across the southern United Kingdom and northern France will occur on Saturday, while southern France experiences the strongest wind on Sunday as a second low pressure system sweeps through the region.

Widespread wind speeds of 80-96 km/h (50-60 mph) are anticipated from southeastern parts of the British Isles to northern Spain that can lead to power outages.

An AccuWeather Local StormMax™ï¸ of 120 km/h (75 mph) is possible, especially on western-facing shores and in the higher elevations.

Past Monday, unsettled weather with more opportunities for rain is expected for the first full week of November, though another wind storm is not anticipated.
