Developing medicane threatens Italy to western Greece with another round of flooding rainfall

By Maura Kelly, AccuWeather meteorologist & Adam Douty, AccuWeather senior meteorologist

Published Nov 11, 2019 7:02 PM EDT

Another round of heavy rainfall across the Mediterranean coast will extend the concern for flooding across the region, while one city in western Greece may receive a year's worth of rainfall in the month of November.

A storm system spinning over the southern Mediterranean Sea and northern Africa will bring rounds of rain to Italy and parts of the Balkan Peninsula through the middle of the week.

The medicane produced areas of rain in parts of Italy on Monday with the heaviest rain arriving in southern Italy on Monday night. By Tuesday morning, this rain spreads into northeast Italy and the western Balkans.

In southern Italy, 75-100 mm (3-4 inches) of rain was reported, including in Catanzaro.

Downpours in these areas can continue through Tuesday night.

As the storm pushes northeast into eastern Europe through Thursday, rain will continue at times along the coast from Slovenia to Greece.

Venice, Italy saw significant flooding on Tuesday as water levels rose.

"Widespread rainfall totals of 50 to 100 mm (2 to 4 inches) are expected across the region through Thursday," stated AccuWeather Meteorologist Tony Zartman.

An AccuWeather Local StormMax™ of 150 mm (6 inches) of rain is likely in the higher elevations and in any areas that get prolonged periods of heavy rain.

As of Monday afternoon, Rome, Italy, has reported 65 mm (2.56 inches) of rainfall, bringing the monthly total to 129 mm (5.09 inches) so far for November. Rome typically receives 135 mm (5.32 inches) through the entire month.

Naples, Italy, has already surpassed the normal monthly rainfall of 89 mm (3.42 inches) with 146 mm (5.74 inches) of rain falling through the beginning of the month.

The rainfall in Kerkyra, Greece, has been even more staggering. So far this month, 331 mm (13.02 inches) of rain has been reported, far exceeding the normal of 79 mm (3.12 inches).

It has been a wet year overall for Kerkyra with 1,209 mm (47.60 inches) falling through the beginning of November. The normal amount of rain in a year is 690 mm (27.15 inches). With more rounds of rain expected through the end of the month, Kerkyra may receive a year's worth of rain this November.

"More rain across the region will only increase the risk of flash flooding and mudslides throughout the week," Zartman added. "Wet conditions have led to saturated soil across the region, making it easier for gusty winds to knock over trees."

The wet pattern across southern Europe is not expected to end any time soon.

While a small storm will bring another quick round of rain to southern Italy on Thursday, a large storm is forecast to swing through western Europe before heading toward the Mediterranean, prolonging the risk of flooding.

Similar to the current storm, this one will slow down and settle near the western Mediterranean Sea into this weekend. In contrast, however, the majority of the heaviest rain is expected to be directed to northern Italy rather than southern Italy and the Balkans.

More rain is expected to move through the region to end next week, but heavier downpours look to be more widespread.
