Germany: Bitter cold to continue this week following coldest night of the winter
The lowest temperature in Germany this winter was recorded on Monday morning as the mercury fell to minus 27 Celsius (minus 16.6 Fahrenheit) on Zugspitze Mountain in the Alps of southern Germany.
This bitterly cold air will not be going anywhere any time soon, as the coldest air of the season will remain across Germany the next several days.
Temperatures failed to rise above freezing anywhere in the country on Tuesday and even lower temperatures are expected in many areas on Wednesday.
Wednesday is expected to be the coldest day of the week for northern and central Germany, with high temperatures ranging between minus 8 and minus 6 C (18-22 F).
Along with the frigid conditions, largely dry weather will prevail throughout the country into Thursday.
The exception will be northern Schleswig-Holstein on Wednesday and Thursday where snow squalls will bring dangerous travel.
These locations can see a quick 2-8 cm (1-3 inches), along with strong winds and poor visibility due to these snow squalls.

Temperatures will moderate a few degrees in most locations across the country on Thursday; however, high temperatures will remain below freezing throughout the country.
Change will be in the air on Friday as milder air begins to arrive from the southwest. Moisture accompanying this milder air mass will produce light snowfall across southern and western areas from Stuttgart to just west of Frankfurt and Cologne.
This milder air will continue to spread across the remainder of the country this weekend, with temperatures returning to seasonable levels in all areas by Sunday.
