Freezing rain to accompany Arctic blast across the southern Plains early this week

The second winterlike storm system in less than a week is set to track across through the southern Plains early week, bringing along the threat for freezing rain and bitterly cold temperatures.

The second wintry storm in less than seven days is set to track through the southern Plains early this week, with the threat for freezing rain and bitterly cold air.

The storm can unleash a brief period of freezing rain as frigid air settles in.

An Arctic front tracking through the Front Range and Plains to close out the weekend will continue southward into Texas early this week.

After dry, warm and settled conditions spanned the weekend across the southern Plains, the approaching cold front will send temperatures plummeting.

Across western Oklahoma and the Panhandle of Texas, wind gusts could exceed 40 mph once the front passes through.

As temperatures drop in the wake of the cold front, light rain and drizzle will switch over to a brief period of freezing rain across portions of northern Texas, Oklahoma and extreme northwest Arkansas.

Wet surfaces from rain or melting flurries across this area have the potential to freeze, which can lead to slippery travel conditions.

Flurries can fly across Kansas and Oklahoma where plummeting temperatures will dry out the air and hinder the development of snow.

The Arctic blast will surge into central and southern Texas overnight on Monday and into Tuesday morning, shifting the threat for frozen precipitation.

Residents from Fort Stockton, San Angelo and even Del Rio, Texas, may have to prepare for freezing rain overnight on Monday into Tuesday morning.

Motorists traveling along Interstate 10 in south-central Texas on Tuesday morning should look out for slick spots, especially on bridges and overpasses.

The window for freezing rain will be brief across these areas after the Arctic front blasts through.

Cold and dry air will quickly return in its wake.

By midweek, record-challenging temperatures will grip the eastern two-thirds of the nation as a powerful area of high pressure settles into the southern Plains.
