Partial solar eclipse from Pennsylvania
Partial solar eclipse from Pennsylvania
By Jesse Ferrell, AccuWeather meteorologist and senior weather editor

I decided it was worth getting up this morning to view the partial solar eclipse from my home in central Pennsylvania, even though the forecast did not look good for cloud-free viewing. I'm happy that I did.

The sun rose this morning at 5:40 a.m. Looking at my webcam time-lapse video from yesterday, it looked like I should be able to see the sun from my porch shortly before 6:00 when it rose above nearby trees. I did see a red crescent behind a tree briefly, but then it went behind the clouds once again. Finally, by around 6:15, it emerged from the clouds, the eclipse nearly over.

These photos were taken with my Nikon 1 J4 camera with a 110mm lens and reduced exposure.

I also took pics with my Samsung Galaxy S9+ cell phone, but predictably they did not turn out as well.

You can see here how cloudy the lower sky was in the zoomed-out shot below, and how lucky my shots were. Fifty miles to my southwest, it was raining for hours around sunrise in Altoona, Pennsylvania.
