Big December storm drops 2 feet of snow on North Carolina, Virginia
A large and early December snowstorm dropped more than a foot of snow on much of North Carolina and Virginia, with the most, 34 inches, falling at the unmanned Mount Mitchell station in North Carolina (highest point east of the Mississippi). The storm snarled travel and brought cities to a standstill. At the peak, over 250,000 customers were without power; 150,000 still were in North Carolina this morning.

At my childhood home in Boomer, North Carolina, about 16-18 inches of snow fell. This would have been one of the largest snowstorms since I was born in North Carolina.
The map above was created by AccuWeather; the National Weather Service's map is shown below, followed by a list of top snowfalls that I have composed based on National Weather Service and Ski Slope reports.

Also there is a 5600-pixel high-res version of the NWS map that I captured at the link below, showing all amounts >=12 inches.
