Anniversaries of 2011, 2012 tornado outbreaks
Five years ago today, I was blogging about the biggest tornado outbreak I'd ever covered. Over 230 tornadoes from Kansas to the Carolinas left 38 dead and caused more than half a billion dollars in damage.

Little did I know, that record would be challenged by the "Super Outbreak" later that April.

On April 15, 2011, extreme meteorologist Reed Timmer and his team filmed this EF3 tornado passing through Clinton, Mississippi. This tornado was on the ground for 17 miles and moving at a speed of 45 mph:
Another event of note was the April 14, 2012, tornado outbreak; AccuWeather meteorologists Mike Smith and Becky Elliot have eye-witness reports from Wichita, Kansas, on their blogs. Over 100 tornadoes were reported.
And yet these both pale in comparison to the April 25-28, 2011, outbreak, which spawned nearly 300 tornadoes killing as many people. It was the deadliest tornado outbreak since the Tri-State Tornado of 1925. Becky wrote a blog about it last year. We'll have more news and videos on that outbreak as the anniversary date gets closer.
