2011 Tuscaloosa-Birmingham tornado aerials before and after
I mentioned last week that the 5-year anniversary of the April 25-28 tornado outbreak was coming up. Five years ago today, April 27, 2011, there were over 300 tornado reports in the Deep South (later revised to 219). Over 300 people were killed.

For the anniversary, I've created this animation comparing aerial shots from Google Earth before (2010), after (April 28, 2011) and since (2012, 2014, 2016). The damage areas are inside the EF-4 tornado damage areas from Tuscaloosa to Birmingham. It's amazing to see the extent of the damage done, and, in some cases, what little has been rebuilt.
