Flooding rain to impact Spain and Portugal into Monday night
By Robert Richards, AccuWeather meteorologist
Updated Aug 7, 2020 4:30 PM EDT
A storm system is going to bring a heavy rain and flooding threat across Spain and Portugal through Monday night. This system will have plenty of moisture to work with coming out of the Atlantic Ocean.
The heaviest rain is expected to fall Sunday night into Monday across much of Portugal and northwest Spain. This will lead to localized areas of flooding and cause travel delays.
Cities impacted by the heavy rain will include Lisbon and Porto in Portugal and Ourense, Vigo and Pontevedra across northwest Spain. If roadways are flooded in these areas, be sure to turn around and don't drown.
Rain amounts of 25-50 mm (1-2 inches) will be expected across most areas, though 50-100 mm (2-4 inches) are expected across the majority of Portugal and parts of northwest Spain, where the heaviest rain is expected. The AccuWeather Local StormMax™ of 150 mm (6 inches) is expected from Ourense down into Lisbon.
Rain is expected to arrive across Madrid Monday night. The rain is expected to be steady for a time, but no flooding concerns are likely since heavier rain is not likely.
The weather following this storm later in the week could feature another round of heavy rain for Portugal and northwest Spain Wednesday into Thursday, which could produce additional flooding concerns.
